Richardson had been a resident of Lansing for 40 years and a member of the staff of the Community Nursery School since 1948. She was named director in 1956 and was honored for her work with the school by the Lansing City Council and the Lansing YWCA following her retirement.

She began caring for 10 children in the Community Nursery School when it was located at 1417 Olds Ave. During her tenure she served as cook, janitor, teacher and administrator, working up to 12 hours a day or longer if needed, in the center at 1309 W. Washtenaw. At the time of her retirement, she was overseeing the care of 40 children on a daily basis.
