Hello! And welcome! If you are looking for a fun way to introduce young children to the letter K, you’ve come to the right place! I have a really cute activity for the letter K that young learners will love to do. As a bonus, it is also a great way for young children to exercise their fine motor skills. This letter K activity is a perfect addition to your letter of the week activities for pre-K and kindergarten students, and can even be turned into an English Language Arts learning center or folder game. It’s a great activity for your homeschool or classroom, or even for a letter of the week packet. Read on for the free printable activity sheet and instructions for how to use it.
You Will Need the Following Materials:
- paper or card stock
- a glue stick or craft glue
- scissors

Instructions for the K is for Kangaroo! Letter K Activity
- Print the K is for Kangaroo! Letter K activity. You will find the free printable file below. Make sure to print both the K is for Kangaroo! file and the Kangaroo back file. You can print the color version if you want to skip the coloring step, or the black and white version if your children like to color. If you plan to use the activity as a center, you will want to print the Kangaroo part of the file onto card stock.

- Introduce the letter Kk to your child. Write a big letter K on a whiteboard or piece of paper, or simply show your child the letter K on the activity sheet. This is a great time to show your child the upper case and lowercase letter K. I don’t usually introduce lowercase letters to my children when they are first learning the sound of a letter of the alphabet because some of the lower case letters are so confusing (b, d, p, q for example – who thought THAT was a good idea?!). But in the case of letter K, the lower case and uppercase are so similar that I think it’s ok to introduce them together. So feel free to write letter Kk with uppercase and lowercase letter k on your whiteboard or piece of paper.
- Teach your child the sound of letter K. K makes the same sound as a hard C. It is the sound you hear at the beginning of kangaroo, kitten, and kite. Practice the K sound with your child while pointing to letter K.
- Have your child or children color the kangaroos and the letter Ks.
- Now cut the strip off the top of the letter K activity sheet.
- Have your child cut out the letter K boxes and the baby kangaroos. Younger children might need help with this step. But let them try! It’s good to exercise those fine motor skills and scissor skills. And young children usually enjoy cutting things out. They don’t have to be cut out perfectly.

- Cut out the kangaroo backs also.
- Cut the top of the mama kangaroos’ pouches. Older children can probably manage this step on their own. This may be tricky for younger children. Feel free to slice it with an Exacto knife if you think your child will be frustrated by trying to cut it.

- Flip the K is for Kangaroo! activity sheet over. Glue around the edges of the kangaroo backs and glue the backs behind the kangaroo pouches. These are going to create a little pocket for the letter Ks and baby kangaroos to go in, so position them carefully to make sure the back is glued over the top of the pouch. Make sure your child does not apply glue to the center of the back of the kangaroo. This will glue the pouch shut and ruin the fun!

- Now your kangaroos should all have a little pouch. Let your child put the baby kangaroos and the letter Ks in the pouches. Encourage her to say the letter K sound while she does this.

Instructions for Making the K is for Kangaroo! Letter K Activity into a Learning Center
