Week 5 of the Iowa high school football season is over, and there were several exciting matchups to keep an eye on throughout the IHSAA schedule.

The Bombers earn a huge win to open up district play, taking down Indianola, 16-14. Both teams move to 3-2 on the season with the result.

The Tigers drop their third-straight game and Linn-Mar gets back on track in a down-to-the-wire game in Class 5A.

9:41 Valley cruises over Ames
The Tigers posted a big win over the Little Cyclones, 49-14, in Ames.
9:38 Cedar Rapids Washington on top of undefeated Jefferson
9:35 Ankeny takes down Iowa City West
The Trojans made it a battle late, but the Hawks built enough of a cushion to take down West, 38-22, on Friday night. Both teams are now 2-3 on the season after the game.
9:30 Iowa City Liberty up big over Prairie
The Lightning look well on their way to posting a 4-1 record through the first five weeks of the season.
9:25 Iowa City Regina remains undefeated
9:20 Southeast Polk dominates Sioux City East
There were some questions about the Rams early in the season, but those have all but disappeared now after moving to 3-2 on the season with a huge 48-3 win over the Black Raiders.
9:20 Johnston takes down Waukee
The Dragons earn their second straight big win to move to 3-2 on the season with a 21-7 win over Waukee. The Warriors drop their second straight and move to 3-2 on the season.
9:14 Pella pulling away and en route to 5-0
It looked like there was upset potential between the Dutch and Carlisle, but Pella showed why they're a top-10 team in the fourth quarter.
9:11 All tied up in big Class 5A matchup
9:10 Earlham with a big win over Madrid
Earlham, the No. 9 team in our Class A rankings, takes down No. 5 Madrid. Earlham gets a huge 33-7 victory.
9:05 Some drama out in Cedar Rapids
Jefferson is looking to start the season 5-0. Washington is looking for just its second win of the season.
9:00 Waukee Northwest up big over Waterloo West
There's one quarter to play in that one and the Wolves are up 42-7
8:58 Ankeny Centennial goes final
The Jags bounce back from their first loss of the season with a resounding win over Des Moines East, 44-7.
8:55 Dowling Catholic gets things done
In a win that ended with a running clock, the Maroons take down Des Moines Roosevelt, 37-0. Dowling will likely remain as the top team in our Class 5A rankings after a performance like that. Maroons move to 4-1 on the season, Roosevelt drops to 1-4
8:53 Things getting tight between Pella and Carlisle
The Dutch are undefeated and the Wildcats are winless. This would be a pretty big upset should Carlisle pull it up.

The Dragons drain the clock after a turnover and go up 21-7 late in the third quarter.

The Hawks up big, 31-7, over Iowa City West in the second quarter. That might just put this one out of reach.

8:20 Ballard up over No. 9 Indianola
Bombers are capitalizing on great defense and a couple big plays so far. They're up 13-0 over Indianola at the break.
8:18 Solon starting to pull away
The Spartans, who were down 7-6 at one point, are now up 19-7 about halfway through the second quarter. Still plenty of time in that one, but Solon has made it look easy over the last 10 minutes or so.
8:15 Cedar Falls takes lead over Linn-Mar
It's halftime in that big Class 5A battle. Cedar Falls is up 14-7.

8:10 Possible upset taking shape in Class 1A
8:05 Marion leads Waterloo East
8:00 Solon and Grinnell in a battle
There are plenty of blowouts happening throughout the state tonight. But this game is a tight one for now. It's a ranked matchup between two of our top-10 teams out east.
7:55 Waukee strikes back against Johnston
The Dragons still hold a one-score lead, but Waukee has battled back, finding the end zone for the first time tonight.
Grant Gammell found paydirt from 5 yards out to make it 14-7 Johnston.
7:52 Pella finds paydirt against Carlisle
It's 7-0 for the Dutch early in the second quarter.
7:50 Iowa City Liberty with a nice start
The Lightning have been a surprise in Class 5A this season under first-year head coach Scott Chandler. They're up 14-0 over CR Prairie early in the game.
7:46 Brodey Brandt take a bow
The senior DB just picked up his second interception of the night for Southeast Polk. Both picks have resulted in touchdowns for the Rams.

7:44 Johnston adds to its lead over Waukee
The Dragons go up 14-0 thanks to this beautiful pass from Will Nuss to Tino Daye. We;re about halfway through the second quarter in that one.
7:41 Ankeny makes it a three-score lead
Just about five minutes after scoring a touchdown, Ankeny adds another to its tally thanks to a long run by Caden Henkes for the Hawks.
It's 17-0 Ankeny over Iowa City West in that one.
7:38 Urbandale up two scores on Sioux City North
The J-Hawks may have finally found their footing. They won their first game of the season last week and are up 14-0 early on Sioux City North tonight.

It's 10-0 Hawks early in the second quarter.
7:35 Sam Zelenovich finds paydirt again
The Southeast Polk wide receiver finds the end zone for the second time tonight. Rams up 14-3 over Sioux City East with still about a minute left in the first quarter.

Cedar Falls is trying to avoid dropping its third straight game. Linn-Mar is coming off its first loss of 2024. Somebody is going to break a trend tonight.
7:30 Dowling is cruising over Des Moines Roosevelt
We don't have a reporter out at the game, but it's currently 21-0 before the end of the first quarter. Maroons are on a roll.
7:28 Ankeny strikes first against Iowa City West
A 20-yard field goal gets the Hawks on the board first. They lead 3-0 late in the first quarter out in Ankeny.
7:26 Atlantic and Knoxville in a battle
7:25 Iowa City Regina came out ready to play
The Regals are already up, 14-0, over visiting Cascade tonight. First quarter is nearly done out east.
7:22 Ankeny Centennial cruising over Des Moines East
It's 16-0 after two quick touchdowns and a safety.
7:20 Sam Zelenovich captures lead for Southeast Polk
Senior wideout Sam Zelenovich hauls in a 28-yard pass from Holden Hansen. Rams up on Sioux City East, 7-3, after the PAT.
Still early in that one, 4:47 remaining in the opening quarter.
7:16 Johnston finds the end zone against Waukee
The Dragons drive down the field and find the end zone from three yards out on a handoff to D'Angelo Burke.

7:14 Sioux City East takes lead over Southeast Polk
The Black Raiders had a couple conversions on third-and-long on the opening drive, and Sioux City East cashes in with three points following a 35-yard field goal from Jacob Borrall.
It's 3-0 Black Raiders over Southeast Polk.
7:10 Spirit Lake strikes first against Okoboji

7:08 Will Hawthorne continues to dominate
The Iowa State commit has Gilbert up on Des Moines Hoover after a big score on the first play of the game. They lead 8-0 after a 2-point conversion.
7:05 Ankeny Centennial up on Des Moines East already
The Jags take the opening kickoff to the house, 98 yards thanks to Braeden Jackson
It's 7-0 Centennial just 15 seconds into the game.

What Iowa high school football games are we at tonight?
The Register and its affiliated publications will have reporters and photographers throughout the state tonight to cover the Week 5 action. In Des Moines, lead preps reporter Alyssa Hertel will be covering a CIML battle between No. 4 Waukee and No. 9 Johnston. Eli McKown will be out in Ankeny to watch the Hawks take on Iowa City West.
Just north of the metro, Joe Randleman will be watching the No. 9 team in Class 4A, Indianola, take on Ballard. Over on the east side of the state, Marc Ray will be covering Class 1A No. 5 Iowa City Regina against Cascade.

As of Thursday evening, it does not appear that any weather will prove to impact Week 5 of Iowa high school football action across the state. Temperatures will likely hover in the low 70s to high 60s and perhaps a bit lower than that, depending on the part of the state you're in.
Not quite traditional 'football weather', but we're getting there.
