If you are saved today, it’s not because you willed it. It’s not because you worked. It’s not because of anything in you. It’s because God today showed mercy to you. God says, “I’m not obligated to receive anyone. When I save, it’s because I extend mercy.” And He’s free to extend mercy. If He’s not, then He’s not God, and my friend it’s not mercy if He’s obligated. God saves today because He’s merciful.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Nowhere in the Word of God will you find such a graphic picture of the sovereignty of Almighty God than in this figure of the Potter. We’ve forgotten in our days the rights of God. We’ve emphasized so much the rights of man. We say today God can’t do certain things. My beloved, this morning we need to remind ourselves that God has incontestable authority. He has an irresistible ability to form and to fashion individuals and nations. This is His universe. This is His universe.

We are creatures

“If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.” Let me say today that when God started off with mankind, He started with man as a giant Potter, taking man and making him out of the very dust of the earth. We have come forth from the hand of a Creator who made us. And it’s time today that we in America get that in our thinking again because that’s what gave us our liberty—that we are creatures of a Creator.

Clean hearts

“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all the filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” And there’s no power for the believer today if he’s going to live in the dirt of the present hour. You can’t wallow in this today, my friends, and expect to have power in your life. I’m getting a little weary now of these people that say, “Well, we must keep up with this day in which we live.” Why do you have to keep up with this day? Let’s get rid of the dirt and the filth and come to Him and say, “Create in me a clean heart, O God…. Make me the kind of a man or the kind of a woman I should be.”

It’s time to take a stand

“Thus saith the Lord; cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord…. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord.” Are you committed to Him? I am of the opinion that we are coming to a day when you’re going to have to be all out for God or you’re going to have to be against Him. I do not think that very much longer you’re going to be able to walk the fence. I don’t think very much longer you’re going to be able to straddle issues. I think you’re going to have to take a stand—take a stand for God or take a stand against Him.

He delights in salvation

God does not delight in judgment. The prophet says, “Judgment is his strange work.” He doesn’t like to judge. But don’t you forget it; He will do it. He’d rather not judge, but God will judge. He delights in salvation. He wants to save. It’s not His will “that any should perish,” but He does say, “he that believeth not is already condemned.” He will come into judgment. He will not pass from death to life. God says that he stands condemned before Him, but God says, “It will break my heart if you don’t come to Christ. He died for you. And it will break My heart if you don’t come—but if you don’t come,” He says, “you’re lost.”

God’s concern for us

Who is concerned about you today? Well, I’m of the opinion that there are very few. How about the people where you work? How about even the people in your church? How about your family even? A man told me some time ago, he says, “I honestly wonder who really cares about me today.” And he’s a successful businessman. And he says, “Everybody, including my family, they are only interested in what they can get out of me.” How sad. But God’s concerned about you. And He’s concerned about me. That’s quite comforting in this tremendous universe in which I live. I could get lost in it I’m so small. But He’s got His eye out—He has a concern for us.

A glorious privilege

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.” The most glorious privilege you and I have is that we have a book here that the Holy Spirit alone can interpret to us and make real in our lives. And you and I can never know the will of God ignorant of the Word of God. And again, that’s the reason that a great many believers today are cruising in a fog, totally ignorant of the Word of God. He’s the author of the book. And He alone can interpret it to our hearts and lives.

Let God lead

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. Be not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.” Now what kind of a believer are you today? Do you have a bit and bridle in your mouth? And a lot of Christians are like that today. And that’s what they want—somebody to pull on the bit here, pull on it there, to tell them where to turn. God says, “I guide you with mine eye. I want you to stay close to Me and My Word so you can see, so I can lead you, so I can prompt you and guide you.” It’s not a voice or a vision from heaven.

Our Shepherd

My friend today, the only place in the world you and I will ever be contented and satisfied and happy is when we reach the place where we are abandoned to the will of God. And until you get there, oh, you’re going to be a Christian that’s unhappy and miserable. Oh, today to be a dedicated child of God. But my friend, this wonderful Savior died for you on the cross, and He asks you to come all the way to Him. All the way to Him. He says, “My sheep hear my voice … they follow Me, I give unto them eternal life, they shall never perish.” Oh, to have Him today as a Shepherd. Is He your Shepherd?

The whole Word

Now the Holy Spirit will never lead contrary to the Word, but He’ll always lead in accordance to the Word of God. And a great many people try to use the Word of God like it’s a sort of a Ouija board. They get into a particular circ*mstance, and they go to the Bible, and they begin to thumb through it. And they find a nice comforting verse, and they say, “Well, this is what God gave me.” God is not giving out verses like shuffling cards. He gives the Word. The whole Word. The Word of God. And you don’t go to the Word of God and pick out one little verse. The Bible’s not a spare tire. It’s not a first aid kit. It’s a chart and compass. In fact, here is God’s radar screen.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
